Apple and Motorola have helped lead the way in boosting the number of smartphone shipments, a new report has stated.
The IDC Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker report has revealed that smartphones accounted for 15.4 per cent of all mobile phone shipments in 2009, an increase from the 12.7 per cent experienced in 2008.
Apple's iPhone doubled in shipments in the fourth quarter of 2009 from the same quarter the previous year.
"Demand for the Apple iPhone continued unabated during the holiday quarter and agreements with multiple carriers within the same market enabled further distribution," the survey stated.
Motorola has also taken a top five spot in mobile phone vendors after launching its first Android-based handsets.
Combined shipments of Motorola's CLIQ/DEXT and DROID at Verizon Wireless reached two million units "in their debut", it added.
Motorola recently reported that its first Android smartphones were welcomed by the market and that it is set to continue to develop its MOTOBLUR service. |
