Palm Pre

Palm Pre

The Palm Pre is a mobile phone that has been released to compete directly with the iPhone, but rather than copying the ubiquitous Apple handset, the Pre is packed full of clever software and powerful hardware to provide an improved user experience.

It is a curvy, sleek smartphone with a 3.1 inch screen. If you slide the screen upwards you can unveil the full QWERTY keypad, arranged horizontally as you might expect to find on a BlackBerry. There is also a generous 8GB of internal storage space and the exclusive inclusion of the webOS mobile operating system.

About the Palm Pre

The Palm Pre looks and feels like a cutting edge device, with a reassuringly expensive design aesthetic and an imaginatively exploited touch screen interface which allows it to stand out from the crowd in many ways. Before we examine the specifics of the webOS software, it is worth looking at the raw facts and figures of the Pre's hardware.

On the rear of the Pre is a 3 megapixel camera with an LED flash, which allows for the capture of good quality photographs in all lighting conditions. Do not expect to find your pictures on the front cover of the next edition of National Geographic, but do expect to find yourself using the camera frequently in day to day life.

The 3.1 inch touch sensitive screen is not the largest available on the smartphone market, but it is worth bearing in mind that devices with larger screens are usually much heavier and less portable than the Pre. With its perfectly proportioned frame the Pre will slide neatly into any pocket or bag and the handset will not dwarf smaller hands.

The screen is also high-resolution which means text will be crisp and legible no matter how big or small it is and viewing photos and videos on the Pre will allow them to look their best despite the small format of the device.

Although the touch screen is used for most functions on the Pre, typing messages and text can be performed using the full QWERTY keypad if you slide up the top half of the phone. This will not be to everyones' tastes and indeed since the keys are rather small it may be difficult for people with larger thumbs to actually use the keypad. However, if you can get to grips with the keys then it will vastly increase your message typing speed, which is good if you are a frequent and prolific mobile messenger.

Inside the Palm Pre is 8GB of storage space which you can use as you see fit and it also has built-in GPS, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and 3G connectivity to give you a whole host of options when it comes to adding peripherals, surfing the internet and navigating.

The key to the success of the Palm Pre is its webOS operating system and interface. This is one of the most powerful multitasking mobile platforms, allowing you to run tons of applications and gain quick access to your most frequently used software in seconds. You can also receive live updates from social networking sites including Twitter directly to your phone.

The possibilities may seem a little overwhelming and confusing to the first time user, but spending some time with the Pre will allow its full potential to be unleashed.
