About the Nokia N97 Black

It is important to realise that the N97 is not a phone that does anything by halves. Nokia has decided that it is perfectly acceptable to sacrifice good looks and pocket-friendliness in exchange for high end performance and over the top functionality. As such the N97 is not exactly a smartphone aimed at the casual user.

The fact that the N97 is a bit of a beast is not going to be a problem for its target audience. The touch sensitive screen is 3.5 inches across the diagonal, which is exactly the same size as the screen used by the iPhone. Unlike Apple's device, the N97 uses resistive screen technology which means you will need to use a fingernail, a firm press or a stylus to use the screen to its full potential.

The N97 cannot register multiple touches on the screen, but there is a feedback function which makes the phone vibrate slightly with every press so that it feels a little like depressing a physical key.

If you do not fancy using the touch screen for typing you can always use the full QWERTY keypad. This is partly to blame for the slightly bulky design of the N97, but the keyboard layout will become instantly familiar and makes typing for extended periods a doddle.

On the rear of the N97 you will find a 5 megapixel camera with high quality optics and a dual LED flash, making the N97 far more capable as a photographic and video shooting handset than the iPhone could hope to be. You will have plenty of room to store all of your videos and snaps thanks to the 32GB of on board storage space.

The N97 is compatible with 3G networks and HSDPA downloading, which to the layman basically means that going online with the N97 will be as fast as possible and downloading files and sending emails should be seamless and quick. You can also get online using the built-in Wi-Fi connectivity, although you will need to be close to a wireless network to take advantage of this feature.

Connectivity plays an important role in the operation of the N97. You can customise the home screen, which is the default view you will see, to include a variety of useful shortcuts, applications and widgets.

You can add social networking widgets for sites such as Facebook and Twitter and the N97 will automatically update you with any new tweets and status changes as and when they happen, displaying them on your home screen.

The Nokia N97 uses the popular Symbian operating system, which means that there are plenty of great mobile applications preinstalled. You can also access the Ovi Store where you can browse through and download hundreds of additional applications, many of which are free of charge.
