About the LG Cookie Fresh GS290

Nearly two years after the launch of the original Cookie in 2008, the Cookie Fresh, or the GS290 as it is also known, has come to offer itself as an even more basic option for people looking to get to grips with touchscreen technology. The 3 inch screen is fairly standard for this price range, but it is bright and easy to use, particularly if you are willing to apply a firm touch. The menus look colourful and viewing videos and photos is easy when you hold the phone in the landscape position.

The Cookie Fresh is almost the same size as the Cookie Plus and the original KP500 Cookie, but it is actually a little larger and chunkier than its stable mates. The reasons behind this are not immediately apparent, as LG has stripped out a couple of the features in order to keep the cost of this phone right down. This is notable in the inclusion of a 2 megapixel camera. The other Cookie models feature a 3 megapixel camera, but for standard pictures taken in good lighting conditions, the Fresh is perfectly adequate. You will need to pay a lot more for a phone in order to get a discernible difference between the photographic capabilities and in this price bracket the inclusion of any kind of camera is welcome.

The LG Cookie Fresh will appeal to music fans, as it is designed to provide users with a cheap portable player solution. You can slot in virtually any kind of headphones thanks to the integrated 3.5mm socket and if you have a Bluetooth headphone set you can connect these wirelessly. The Cookie Fresh features a microSD memory card slot, which is sensible as it allows the user to add in their own extra memory at a later date. MicroSD memory cards can also be useful when you are synchronising your phone with your PC, as if you have a card reader the process of transferring files will become quicker and you will not have to rely on LG's proprietary media software to get the job done.

The LG Cookie Fresh comes with three different homescreens. The first is dedicated to widgets and you can choose from a number of different types to add and arrange in any order. The second is dedicated to your contacts and it keeps the people that you call or text most often within easy reach. The third is LG's unique LiveSquare service. This is an entertaining if ultimately pointless little service that displays your favourite contacts as little icons onscreen and then surrounds them with wildlife as you continue to call and text them. Some will ignore the LiveSquare frequently, but others will really get into the little world that it organically develops for you.
